About Us

The Institute for Learning in Retirement Inc. at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut is a non-profit, community based group of active adults over the age of 55 who share a love of learning. At its heart, ILR is an academic program designed to suit varied interests. We enjoy college-level academic pursuits without concern for credit, grades or prerequisites. This creates unique educational opportunities made possible by members who volunteer their time and by collaborative leadership. All our classes are held during the day at varied locations within the Greater New Haven area.

Our ILR is hosted by Albertus Magnus College. The college’s support allows us classroom space for our fall (October-November) and spring (April-May) semesters. Some classes are also held at other sites such as Whitney Center and the Orange Community Center. We are affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network (EIN), an offshoot of ElderHostel (now known as Road Scholar).

The courses we offer are led both by professors from various colleges and universities in our area as well as by ILR members who want to share their academic interests and passions with their peers. A number of our course leaders are retired professors, others are still teaching.

Our ILR is headed by officers elected every two years and by a Board of Governors.

Course registration is open only to current ILR members. Dues are $20 per calendar year (Jan. 1-Dec. 31).

Volunteer Opportunities

• Over the next several months your Institute for Learning in Retirement needs to replace our President, Vice President of Curriculum, and Secretary.  These leadership positions are crucial to the success of the organization and provide a unique opportunity to exercise your leadership ability. • A liaison is also required for each of the 32 courses being offered this semester. If you wish to help in this capacity, please note your interest when you submit your course registration form.

• Please remember that the success of your ILR is dependent on the willingness of people like you to come forward and contribute some of your time and energy to the many courses offered throughout the year. Become part of the team!
