Matilda (Jerre) Dumbrill MA knew from the age of 10 when she learned to sew that she would work in fashion. With a UConn degree in Art, Clothing and Textiles/ English minor and as a runner-up in the national Vogue Magazine Prix de Paris writing contest, she landed a coveted job as fashion reporter/ editor in New York with Women's Wear Daily, the "bible" of the fashion industry. Other editors saw that she could sew up fashions from the French collections before they were shown in the stores. They persuaded her to design and sew for them. It launched her into a long career as designer/dressmaker. After living in Arizona and Massachusetts, she moved to Orange, returned to her writing and published three books: Makhorka: The Green Cigarette, based on the events of her life, Nothing Is Meaninless—a young woman's travel adventures into the world of spydom., and My Bare Ladies and a Few Clad Men, chronicling the lives of her clients.
