New Haven area residents can take a free virtual tour of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art at 1 p.m. March 18. Sponsored by the Institute for Learning in Retirement, the tour will be conducted via Zoom and led by Yale University student Julie Averbach.

The tour will highlight old and new works at the museum ranging from Ghanaian textiles and French painting to Japanese pottery. Renoir, Michelangelo and Jackson Pollock are among the artists who will be discussed as participants look at their work.

Ms. Averbach is a student at Yale with a double major in art history and psychology. She has a passion for visual culture as a tool for social change. She is interested in the link between art and mental health in older adults. To further that interest, she launched smARTee, a virtual enrichment platform expanding access to the arts that has been used by participants from 18 countries.

Although free, seating for the tour is limited and registration is required.   ILR members can register online beginning just after midnight on March 7.  Non-members can register on March 13. Register by visiting the ILR website, https://www.ilralbertus.org/, and completing the RSVP form.   The Zoom link is provided after the registration is confirmed.

The Institute for Learning in Retirement is a non-profit, community-based group of adults who share a love of learning. Members enjoy college-level classes from the arts and baking to writing and zoology, often taught by active or retired professors or professionals. Classes are held during the day and usually during the week. More information is available at https://www.ilralbertus.org or by calling (203) 747-9675.
